The Kelleher Family Golf Tournament. A reunion, a party, and a family get-together. AKA the perfect place for My Grandma's to be. How did we merge the two? With some awesome cake flavors and toppings, of course! Looks sooo good, right?!
You may have seen the pictures already and heard a bit about how these delectable cakes made the party even sweeter. If you're interested you can find that all here. Those pictures reveal just a little bit about the scrumptious toppings that drew some of our younger guests. Red catches the eye, right?
Well here is how we did it. Simple and easy!
Since we were using the cinnamon no nut cake and the special strawberry white chocolate cake I thought strawberries would be a great and simple topping. But so boring! What about strawberries and balsamic? Perfect!
So I used the nifty Google machine, and the first result (how awesome is Google search, sometimes?) was absolutely perfect! It was a recipe on The Food Network's website (so you know it's good!) from the Barefoot Contessa. Simple Strawberries and Balsamic Vinegar. And where did the idea for the ice cream come from? This delicious picture from their site. Click on the image to head right there.
Want to hear the recipe from me, though? Just in case that link stops working, for whatever reason. Here's what it took.
8 cups of fresh, thickly sliced strawberries
5 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons of sugar
1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper (I went light on this one, I was pairing it with cake!)
Mix it all together, let it sit for 30 mins, and you're set! This was such a hit that once the two small coffee cakes were gone (that's 3.5 lbs of cake!) we still had people eating the last of the strawberries straight from the bowl.
Now get out there and share your favorite summer treats topped with delectable strawberry balsamic. Because you're worth it! (Okay, that may be a L'Oreal phrase, but it applies here, too!)
You can even lick the spoon! That's definitely a plastic knife, but save the knives for the biggest ice cream lovers, I would suggest sticking with the spoon :)
Papa Jack is quite the ice cream fan. |
