Flavorful Fundamentals- All About Walnuts!

by Maggie Kelleher

Do you like walnuts? We here at My Grandma's definitely do. We put walnuts in many of the cakes we make! Luckily for those of you saying "ewww" to the idea of walnuts, it is also possible to special order any of our cakes without walnuts if you so choose, but this particular post might not be for you.

Why not?

A delicious walnut and streusel ribbon runs through the center of our Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake.

Because this post is all about walnuts and the amazing things they do!

Did you know that walnuts are healthy for you? Maybe you did, it's definitely well publicized, but have you ever really looked into how they are healthy? Well that's just what we did, and here's what we found.

1. Walnuts are good for your heart!

Walnuts contain the amino acid l-arginine, which has multiple heart benefits. They also contain a lot of monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids; both heart healthy fats are found in walnuts. Omega-3s are particularly anti-inflammatory, and can prevent blood clots from forming.

 2. Walnuts contain more antioxidants than their nut peers!

Walnuts contain several antioxidants that are only found in a few common foods and are very powerful. These have many health benefits, including controlling speed of aging by fighting free radicals.

3. Walnuts are good for your brain!

Vitamin E, folate, melatonin, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants can all help enhance cognitive function.
My Grandma's uses the best quality Mariani California walnuts in our cakes. Delicious and healthy, they make the perfect addition to our scrumptious and moist coffee cakes, from our original Cinnamon Walnut cakes to Cape Cod Cranberry to Ted Williams Chocolate.

So enjoy that cake with the knowledge that you are doing your body good. Because there is no better feeling than enjoying a delicious slice of My Grandma's with your morning coffee or tea!

  2. Hi Peggy, We're so glad your son enjoyed the cakes! We often hear that when our cakes are shared they get devoured almost before the recipient gets a piece. We hope your son got to eat as much as he wanted and we take great pride in being able to help serve our heroes just a little! Thank you for sharing!
