The Fourth of July is often a time when friends and family get together and celebrate the U.S., the summer, each other, and food. I always like to show up at family gatherings with something new and different. But coffee cake is just so good! How can I get my coffee cake fix while still impressing everyone? Have I got the answer for you!

Grilled Coffee Cake

Fourth of July celebrations so often include a grill, why not make the most of it and use it for dinner and dessert?

We used some New England Blueberry Coffee Cake, cut some thick slices, and grilled it up! Super simple.

To get the gorgeous cross-hatching effect we just made sure to turn each piece after about a minute. Then we flipped them over and did it again. It created the most delicious crunchy outer layer protecting the moist center of each piece. So good!

I would suggest putting the cake somewhere on the grill where it is not too close to a flame, as flames will brown the whole piece, while just the grate will create some great lines.

The left one was closer to a flame. See the difference it made in the crosshatching?

We then took the cake inside to set it up for some pictures so I could share it with you lovely people! We even used our red and blue teacups to fit the Independence Day theme!

Because it was a New England Blueberry cake we decided to top it with some fresh blueberries and added some strawberries to make it the perfect colors for the Fourth of July!

Trying to outshine the creativity of the grilling, my Dad whipped up some glaze to make it look even glossier and more heavenly. He used powdered sugar, water, and some lemon juice, but don't ask me how much of each, even he doesn't know. Just play it by ear-- or consistency-- and I'm sure it will turn out perfectly!

See the glaze-y difference between this one and the last picture?

Delicious and ideal for the Fourth of July! Try it for yourself and let us know what you think! You can find us on  FacebookTwitterPinterestGoogle+, and LinkedIn and follow us for more coffee cake fun, serving suggestions, and happy musings.
