I spent last week in Nashville, and what is there to do in a brand new city? Shop for things you can't find anywhere else. And in Nashville that means antiquing! At least that's what we decided, as everywhere we turned we found a new antique shop. I decided to turn our antiquing trip into an opportunity to do a craft I have always wanted to, and so today I am going to show you how to make a cake stand out of some old dishes.

I found these two dishes at an Antique Mall in downtown Nashville for only $4! The plate has an adorable painting of a mother and her daughters and the glass is pretty thick and stable enough to support a plate and cake, I tested it. I would suggest using a cute little teacup or another ceramic item if you are worried about sturdiness.
To make dishes like these into a cake stand, all you need is the two dishes, super glue, and a hot glue gun. How simple is that?!
Here's how to do it:
Wash the dishes and take off tags (The tag on that plate was not easy to get off, it definitely took some elbow grease!) Make sure they are fully dry before you glue them.
Hot glue the center of your base to the bottom of your plate. Hold it on until dry. Run the super glue around the edge of the base to create a second level of stick to ensure that the stand is sturdy. Once the super glue is dry (depending on how much air it gets this may take a while) run over the edge again with hot glue to seal it all in once again.
And voila! Once all of the glue is dry, you will have a wonderfully unique and homemade cake stand that you can show off to your friends for years to come! (As long as you don't put it in the dishwasher).
I took a few pictures of the stand with a few slices of some delicious Lemon Poppy Coffee Cake just so you can get an idea of how the whole project looks when finished. Remember, you can make it look however you want with the right dishes.
