It's Your Birthday!- And A Giveaway!

by Maggie Kelleher

My Birthday was last week, and I decided to take the chance to celebrate with a craft that could last for many birthdays to come. From my sister's to my aunt's, to my next birthday. Thankfully, My Grandma's sent me a delicious Banana Walnut Coffee Cake Birthday Cake that I could dress up and enjoy with my friends.

So I made this cake topper. It's everything I love: glitter, and chevron, and turquoise, oh my! And is just so much fun!

Just in case you want to make one of these fun little toppers yourself, here's how I did it!

You'll need:
  • X-acto knife and cutting board (scissors would work, but be harder)
  • A birthday font you like (I used this one)
  • Paper and card stock or thin cardboard (I pulled mine from recycling)
  • Glitter in your favorite color
  • Mod Podge (I used the gloss kind) (possible alternate you already have)
  • Sponge brush
  • Straws or sticks (for topping)
  • Hot glue gun

I used the paper and a pencil to trace my birthday font from my computer to the paper, and then cut it out with the x-acto knife.

I then used that paper to cut out the tracing on my thin cardboard (which was a box of candy in another life)

Mod Podge is your glitter savior, first paint on a layer, pour your glitter on top (definitely lay out some newspaper first, of course!) and once that dries, dab on another layer of Mod Podge (it keeps your cake topper from constantly raining glitter and if you've ever worked with glitter before, this is an amazing feat!) let it dry, and you're almost done. (I repeated these steps for the back of the letters, to get a great 360 view, but no need if you don't want people to see your message backward).

Figure out how you would like to angle your straws or sticks (I had these straws lying around and filled them with hot glue to strengthen them). Then angle those sticks and hot glue them to the back of your Birthday message! Voila!

And My Grandma's included this adorable Birthday Tin just to make my day extra special!
