Charming Crafts- Thanksgiving Turkey Cake

by Maggie Kelleher

It's been a crazy few weeks, but I promise that I didn't forget about you, wonderful readers, and I wanted to share with you my fun Thanksgiving cake-ventures and a chance to win a cake of your own for Christmas 2014 or your late December celebration of your choosing. Thanksgiving isn't easy, especially when you're hosting. Not only can family make even little things stressful sometimes (I love them to death, but sometimes...) but with all the food you have to make, sometimes dessert doesn't even register on the to-do list.

That's the beauty of this Holiday's cake creation, not only did we not have to bake a cake because My Grandma's had us covered, but we were able to impress and make it fun with only a little bit of work. What creation was this, you ask? Well it was a simple stencil!

All I had to do was draw a simple turkey silhouette on some card-stock paper and hand it to my sister along with an x-acto knife. She did the rest and made this beautiful turkey stencil to fit our 8" My Grandma's Golden Raspberry Coffee Cake.

Shout-out to my sister Jamie for not only cutting out the shape I drew, but adding some intricate leaf designs with a "trust me, it's going to work" attitude.

This was the beautiful outcome!

And here is Jamie and our little cousin Conna posing with it.

Conna and our chocolate lab Georgie got very into it.

We had some help placing the stencil and sprinkling it with powdered sugar and a few tense moments when we were worried that my Grandpa might blow the stenciled sugar into a cloud of non-turkey shaped sweetness, but we lasted long enough for the sugar to settle in and came out with this beautiful turkey day one-of-a-kind cake.

The wow's I got when my family members tried it were well worth it, and just improved a great day!

All you need to try this at home is some thick paper, an x-acto knife and cutting board or a skill with some scissors, and an idea. I would love to see what you come up with! Share your ideas with us!
